Frequently asked questions.

Why the name “Seaux Catholic”?

It is pronounced “sew or SO Catholic.” Being from South Louisiana, we use the term “Geaux Tigers” fairly often, it is an unofficial French term used to root for the LSU Tigers football team. It reflects the Cajun and Creole influences in the region. Many French words or names end with -eaux and are pronounced with the long O sound. The word "Seaux" in our name is a playful phonetic spelling of the word "sew," or in saying, “We are SO Catholic!”

What is a Brown Scapular?

The Catholic scapular is a small piece of cloth that symbolizes a person's devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, and the Carmelite Order. The story behind the scapular is as follows:

  • The vision of St. Simon Stock

In 1251, Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, the Prior General of the Carmelite Order, and gave him the brown scapular.

  • The scapular as a sign and pledge

The scapular is a sign of belonging to Mary and a pledge of her protection. It also symbolizes a commitment to emulate Mary's virtues, such as humility, chastity, and prayer.

  • The scapular as a silent prayer

Wearing a scapular is a silent prayer that expresses love, trust, and veneration for Mary.

  • The scapular as a reminder

The scapular is a reminder to live a faithful Christian life and to emulate Jesus.

  • The scapular's origins

The word "scapular" comes from the Latin word scapula, which means shoulder blade. In the Middle Ages, monks originally designed the scapular as a protective covering for manual labor.

The Church has approved 18 different scapulars for wear.

Are your Scapulars “legit” Brown Scapulars?

Yes! Our Scapulars meet all requirements in gaining Our Lady’s promise of the Brown Scapular.

  1. Each side must be 100% brown wool.

  2. It must be cut in a rectangular shape.

  3. It may be adorned with any sacred image.

  4. Other accent colors may be used but the brown wool must be predominant.

How do I enroll/invest in the Scapular?

The Church has given permission to all priests to invest the faithful in the Brown Scapular.

Our local priest recently did a group investiture after daily Mass where my family were all invested. He also inspected my scapular and happily approved!

Once invested/enrolled, if your Scapular has broken or worn out, you may get another and begin to wear it. The blessing and investiture is still valid for the new Scapular, since the blessing is predominately given to the person who is invested in the Scapular.

Does the Scapular have to touch the skin?

No, just like the Miraculous Medal, it may be worn over or under any part of the clothing.

Do Catholics believe the Scapular is a ticket into Heaven?

No, we do not! Fr. Barry Bossa says it perfectly in his book, Brown Scapular of Mount Carmel. He says, “The very wording of the scapular promise makes it absolutely clear that the Blessed Virgin never intended to substitute the wearing of the brown cloth for living the Christian life.” Instead, the scapular is a sign that its wearer is committed to living the Christian life after the perfect example of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

A former general of the Carmelite Order, the Most Rev. Kilian Lynch, warned against abusing the scapular devotion. “Let us not conclude,” he said, “that the scapular is endowed with some kind of supernatural power which will save us no matter what we do or how much we sin…A perverse, sinful will can defeat the suppliant omnipotence of the Mother of Mercy.” Fidelity to the commandments is required by those seeking the special love and protection of Our Lady.
